Hodis Kavian is an Iranian – Dubai based Hatha Yoga Teacher with a keen interest in natural remedies and nutrition. French literature graduated, she started practicing Yoga at the age of 19, and became a full-time Yoga teacher in 2011.
1. Who has Hodis become thanks to Yoga? Which are the main personality changes that you have seen in yourself?
I am living proof that Yoga is a transformational tool and have seen many changes in myself and others because of it. I used to be a shy person, and through practicing yoga and the art of teaching, my personality completely changed. Not only have I developed tolerance and patience, yoga brought the gift of giving out of me.
2. What could have been your profession, if you were not a yoga teacher?
Initially, I wanted to be a pharmacist, however the calling to be a teacher was always within me. Then during my French literature studies at university, becoming a university professor was my aim.
3. Where were you 5 years ago, and where do you see yourself in 5 years time?
I have been based in Dubai since 2008, and at the time I was working at the Canadian University whilst teaching yoga on a part-time basis; it was in 2011 that I became a full-time yoga teacher. Yoga teaches us to live and be in the present moment, so whilst I do have future plans, I don’t allow myself to become too caught up them. I am open to any opportunity that presents itself, anywhere in the world, as long as there is a connection to my study and growth in my path of yoga.
4. Who is your role model in life, and why?
My role model in life are strong women, that changes the lives of many people. Such as mother Teresa, She selflessly devoted her entire life to the service of others and to the process of spiritual perfection. Her spirit, determination and dedication changed the perceptions and roles of many people lives.
5. And who has been your inspiration in your Yoga career?
I’m greatly inspired by the founder of Iyengar Yoga, B.K.S Iyengar (a.k.a. Guruji); his daughter Geeta Iyengar; and my current teacher and mentor, Gabriella Giubilaro.
6. Tell us how you started your yoga journey, and which was the motivation behind it?
Teaching was always my calling and I was somehow drawn to yoga. Each time I doubted myself, a sentence, phrase or some other guidance assured me that I was on the right path. In my early career in Iran, I didn’t believe that I was good enough to teach, however my first yoga teacher told me not to doubt myself because yoga is going to stay with me until the end of my life.
7. Which are the main changes that you would like to see in the Yoga practice in the next years?
I would love to see yoga become an integral part of everybody´s daily life, in exactly the same way that we eat, brush our teeth, get dressed!
8. If you had all the money to make it a reality, which dream yoga class would you like to create and lead, and why?
I’d love to create a large Yoga complex where the best yoga instructors from around the world travelled to teach, and share their knowledge. The facility would have areas dedicated for yoga classes, physical therapy, retreats for sick children and their families to stay and recover. It would have a charitable element to it, so that those were not fortunate enough to afford it, could come and be healed for free.
9. Tell us the funniest situation that happened in a yoga class (either as a teacher or as a student!)
In class, I often ask my students the name of the pose to help them learn and remember the Sanskrit name. Once in class they didn’t know the asana’s name, and one of the students said, “probably ‘Sarasasana’ something with asana at the end!” The whole class burst out laughing. (For those unfamiliar with Sanskrit, this a completely made up word.)
