Chandnee Kaurani is an Indian Yoga Teacher who started her journey when she was 17, in Mumbai. She travels as often as she can, and hopefully one day will be teaching in Times Square in New York!
1. Tell us which 3 personality traits are the same now as when you were a child?
Curiosity, adventuress , happy go lucky
2. What are your other passions, apart from Yoga?
Aside from Yoga I am very passionate about travelling. I try to travel every opportunity I get. I also love dancing!
3. Do you cook? Which is your favourite food?
Yes, I do cook sometimes. I love avocados, my favourite food is guacamole!
4. Who are your favourite people in your life, and why?
My mom and my best friend, AB.
My mom is extremely loving and calm. She is the glue that holds her family and social circles together. I really look up to her for that.
AB is very supportive and helps me strike a good balance in life.
5.Which is the most remarkable trip that you have ever done in your life?
I have quite a few; but the most recent trip that I remember is the one from this summer in Srilanka, where I was one with nature. I practiced yoga by the beach in Mirissa, hiked in the mountains of Nuwara Eliya, enjoyed amazing Srilankan delicacies and road tripped across the country.
6. Tell us how you started your yoga journey, in which country/city and with whom?
My Yoga journey started at a very young age, I was just 17 when I attended my first Yoga class. I was encouraged to try Yoga by my aunt, Rajalakshmi in Mumbai, India. I started practicing with my first teacher, Sheela Anil along with my aunt, Rajalakshmi Suresh.
7. Which main tips would you give to the students who want to start practicing yoga?
The two main tips that I would like to give the students who want to start yoga are,
Yoga is not just for people who are flexible, it is for everyone. Yoga is not about touching your toes, its about what you learn on the way down.
If you are looking to de-stress and find some time for yourself from your busy schedule, don’t stop after just one class… make yoga a way of life!
8. If anything was possible, to whom would you like to teach a yoga class?
If anything was possible, I would like to teach a yoga class to Roger Federer, one of the world’s leading tennis players. I have read that he has been practicing Pranayama (breathing techniques) and that has helped him a lot with his game. I would love to teach him and understand how Yoga has benefited in his career.
9. If you had all the money to make it a reality, which dream yoga class would you like to create, and where?
I would love to lead a Yoga Flash Mob in Times Square, New York City. Apparently, Times Square has the largest number of nationalities pass through it at any given hour. This would be the ideal platform to spread my love for yoga. The class would start with hatha flow, leading into relaxing Yin postures and culminating with pranayama meditation
10. Tell us the funniest situation that happened in a yoga class (either as a teacher or as a student!)
This one time, while I was teaching my students the Warrior poses, I happened to scratch my thigh, as I looked around, I realized that a bunch of my students were copying me and scratching their thighs as well because they thought it was a part of the asana. This is probably the funniest situation I’ve encountered in a class.
